Bülent Korkmaz (born 1968) is one of the greatest club legends in the history of Galatasaray. He joined the club’s youth academy at the age of eleven and spent his entire professional playing career with Galatasaray, from 1987 to 2005. As a strong and uncompromising centre-back, he became the club’s captain and earned the nickname “Büyük Kaptan” (The Great Captain).
During his career with Galatasaray, Korkmaz won numerous major trophies, including eight Turkish league titles, six Turkish Cups, five Turkish Super Cups, the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. His greatest moment came in 2000, when Galatasaray won the UEFA Cup against Arsenal. Despite suffering a serious shoulder injury during the match, Korkmaz continued playing and became a symbol of the team’s determination and fighting spirit.
Korkmaz was also an important player for the Turkish national team, earning 102 international caps between 1990 and 2005. His biggest achievement with Turkey came at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where Turkey reached an historic third-place finish.
After retiring as a player in 2005, Korkmaz moved into management and coached several Turkish clubs, including Galatasaray, Gençlerbirliği, Bursaspor, Antalyaspor, Konyaspor, Alanyaspor and Çaykur Rizespor.
This shirt comes from the private collection of our matchmaker Peter van Vossen, who donated the shirt to FC Robinstijn. Peter swapped his shirt with Bulent Korkmaz after the match. Peter van Vossen (born in 1968) is a former Dutch football striker known for his pace, determination, and goal-scoring ability. During his career, he played for clubs including VC Vlissingen, Beveren, Anderlecht, Ajax, Rangers, Feyenoord, De Graafschap, and Vitesse. He won the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995 and later became Dutch champion with Feyenoord. For the Netherlands national team, he earned 31 caps and scored 9 goals, representing his country at the 1994 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000.
This specific model was used exclusively during the early 1990s, making it one of the most recognizable Turkey shirts of the era. The match against the Netherlands — a 3–1 victory for Oranje — is well‑documented, and Bülent Korkmaz played a full match as Turkey’s number 3.
